Love your pet, then get pet insurance today!

By Amy-Jo Strutt

Most people think that pet insurance is expensive when the truth is its not. Plans can range from as little as $10/month to $40/month depending on the animal being insured and the extent of the coverage. Unlike other forms of insurance, the deductible is actually quite low often ranging from $50 to $100 per claim. For older pets, premiums and deductibles may be slightly higher. Items that arent covered include regular check ups and immunizations or shots.

Your vet will often have complete information on insurance policies available. You can also purchase pet insurance online from a number of excellent companies. Many companies offer insurance for dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, ferrets and more. Exotic pet insurance is often more expensive than dog or cat insurance for obvious reasons. If you are insuring more than one pet, be sure to request a discount. Most companies offer volume discounts that can range up to 15% off when insuring multiple animals.

Similar to human health insurance, some companies will not insure animals that have pre-existing health conditions. Hereditary conditions may also not be eligible for insurance coverage. You vet will likely be able to tell you if your pet is eligible for insurance.

Like other forms of insurance, pet insurance is available in a variety of plans. They include limited financial coverage which provides fixed yearly dollar coverage. Once you have met this dollar amount, your vet bills will no longer be covered.

Time specific coverage will allow you to claim for a certain time period for a medical condition. Once the time period is up, you will no longer be covered by this plan. Lifelong pet insurance coverage will take care of your pet for life but will often have a yearly dollar limit.

So take care of your entire family including your pet with proper pet insurance. By finding the right coverage, you could be saving yourself hundreds of dollars down the road.
